The first in the series of Independent Realists Exhibitions was held in 1998. It was a tentative endeavour to give a bigger platform to contemporary realistic and figurative art. Now, in 2011 AD, that start has grown into a yearly feast of representional art that now sees its 13th edition. Thus, Museum Møhlmann from the start was a heaven for well-known contemporary artists whose starting point is the visible reality. Possibly, this sense of reality is typically Dutch and has been strong throughout the ages. But this long tradition certainly does not imply that we are dealing with a stuffy sort of art. On the contrary. Visitors of the 13th edition of the Independent Realists Exhibition not only see a surprising amount of variation, but also a fresh, contemporary view on reality. This time 88 artists from all over the Netherlands are represented with more than 400 works of art: paintings, ceramics, etchings, woodcuts, watercolours, scraperboard, graphics; in all these techniques vision and craftsmanship are combined to eminent works of art that constitute a contemporary view on reality. On the occasion of this broad exhibition the 13th edition is published of the Realists-series, in which each artist is represented with two works of art. With this latest addition through the years a fine encyclopedic overview of Dutch Realism has come into existence: a total of about 2000 pages in full colour, that exude thirteen years of creative pleasure.
